What does a pension payment really cost you on Universal Credit?
Money you pay into a personal pension is taken off your earnings before your Universal Credit is worked out. Put in your figures to see how much more UC you'd get, and how much ends up in your pension.

How the sums work
- Start with your maximum award: the standard allowance, plus child amounts, your rent (only up to the most UC will pay, which can be less than your full rent), any health element and anything else you get.
- Take your pension payment off your take-home pay. What's left is the earnings UC counts.
- If you have children or limited capability for work, the first £427 of those earnings is ignored, or £710 if UC doesn't count any rent for you.
- Your UC drops by 55p for every £1 of earnings above that.
- Your pension provider adds 25% on top of what you pay, as basic-rate tax relief.
More detail: how UC treats pension contributions and who it suits.
Before you rely on it
- This is for employees. If you're self-employed, the minimum income floor can stop pension payments lowering the earnings UC counts.
- Savings over £6,000 reduce UC, and over £16,000 end it. Money inside a pension doesn't count as savings.
- The benefit cap, other income and deductions such as advance repayments aren't included.
- Report each payment in your Universal Credit journal and upload proof every UC month (assessment period).
- Work-search rules look at your pay before pension payments, so this doesn't change what your work coach expects of you.
- Most people can't take money out of a pension until 55, rising to 57 from 6 April 2028.
